Therapies offered

Cognitive Behavioural Therapies

The term CBT is an umbrella that covers many different models of therapy. What they have in common is the focus on developing new ways of managing problematic thoughts and behaviours. These approaches generally involve learning skills and strategies in session and practicing them during the week. Although, they look at the past to help someone understand what is happening in the present, the emphasis is the here and now. Apart from traditional CBT, I use ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), CFT (Compassion Focused Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioural Therapy) and elements of Schema Therapy.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Most people have heard about Sigmund Freud and Psychoanalysis. Since then, many different schools and models developed under the umbrella of psychodynamic therapy. The basic idea behind it is that unconscious thoughts, patterns of behaviour, feelings and perceptions, often developed in childhood, affect our current experiences. The main goal is to alleviate suffering and improve relationships and for that many techniques can be used such as: bringing the unconscious into consciousness; exploring the impact of early life; considering conflict between different feelings and aspects of self; uncovering 'defence mechanisms' used to avoid painful feelings and experiences; exploring feelings and patterns in relationships with others, including within the therapeutic relationship.

Humanistic and Existential Therapies

Humanistic and existential psychotherapies are based on different theoretical backgrounds, but both emphasise the understanding of human experience and focus on the person rather than the symptom. Psychological problems derive from difficulties to make authentic, meaningful, and self-directed choices about how to live. It is thought that by increasing self-awareness and understanding that people will be able to live better. The main ideas behind this type of therapy are acceptance, growth, responsibility and freedom.
